☀️ Last week, our community came together for our annual NYC Summer Social — an evening to celebrate the collective impact made over the past year and recognize the people helping strengthen the global Irish community. 🇮🇪🌎

Spent another hour with the Digital Irish Venture Fund team — this time with Marius Smyth — and one line from the conversation has been rattling around in my head ever since.

The Irish diaspora gets talked about as a venture asset all the time. Warm intros, a tap on the shoulder at the right dinner, someone who knows someone. Marius's point is that all of that is hospitality, and hospitality is not a pipeline. The work DIVF is doing is turning the diaspora into something commercial — a sourcing engine that actually moves deals, not a mutual appreciation society.

That distinction is harder to hold than it sounds. The moment you try to make a network commercial, you find out how much of it is people being nice to each other.

We also got into how DIVF co-invests alongside other funds without becoming dependent on whoever is leading the round, why the right place for an Irish fund right now is not at either end of the cheque-size spectrum, and the most practical first step for a founder coming out of Ireland with no US network.
