Bade Stageberg Cox

Bade Stageberg Cox Architecture + Design Our design approach begins with a detailed analysis of the program as well as a specific response to the site.

Bade Stageberg Cox brings together over 35 years of experience with a variety of practices working on nationally and internationally acclaimed architectural projects. We aim to combine our past experience with new energy and optimism, complementing our process of working with the client to achieve a unique design for every project. The initial programming and site ideas are then tested and develop

ed through architectural explorations of concept, spatial sequence, views, materials and details. Construction methods are studied to further the goals of the project. Our process strives to create a solution that specifically addresses the particular requirements and conditions of each individual project.

The Estragon Stool is a furniture piece comprised of 22 identical plywood forms, based on a character from Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. The character is a metaphor for ‘all of humanity,’ and is notable for themes including repetition, interchangeability, inaction, parallelism, and sore feet.

Made of simple plywood shapes with standard assembly, Estragon is one of a series of special locally-produced sculptural furniture projects originally designed for the Armory Show for use in the fair’s lounges and communal spaces. The identical forms can rest in a range of positions of differing heights, adapting to use as seating or a side table.

The multiples were a collaboration between BSC Architecture and Brooklyn Woods, a program of Brooklyn Workforce Innovations whose mission is to create living-wage career opportunities for disadvantaged New Yorkers. They were fabricated locally by Brooklyn Woods, with the intention that future production would be carried out through their program that trains unemployed and low-income New Yorkers in woodworking skills, providing them with a solid foundation to begin a career in woodworking, cabinetmaking and fabrication.

At our High Loft project on the historic Ladies Mile, our renovation integrates open and screened views of the city as the living ‘décor’ of the interior, prioritizing light and connectedness between spaces. Perforated screens of powder-coated steel appear weightless, filtering light and articulating discrete spaces while highlighting their connectedness. Their pattern echoes decorative motifs on the cast iron columns.

The pool at our Casa de Sombra offers a respite from the heat in a shaded courtyard. The tile lap line on the bottom of the pool quotes poet Carl Sandberg in Morse code: ‘poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance.’

Its Art Basel week! and we're recalling our work with various contemporary art fairs, with installations such as such as Sebastian Errazuriz's "The Awareness of Uncertainty", and bespoke fixtures such as our Coriolis light and Estragon stool.

Congratulations to Brooklyn Workforce Innovations and Brooklyn Woods for last night’s inspiring celebration of 25 years of their important work in our community. We were so proud to be an honoree, and grateful for 13 years of collaboration with Brooklyn Woods.

BWI’s mission is to empower low-income New Yorkers by creating living-wage employment opportunities and access to career paths. Their programs counter prevailing market inequalities, especially those based on race or gender, and contribute to a broader movement for economic justice.

Brooklyn Woods offers free training to unemployed and low-income New Yorkers in woodworking and fabrication in NYC. They provide trainees with a solid foundation for a career in woodworking, cabinetmaking, and fabrication.
