Twice Upon A Birthday: An Opera

Twice Upon A Birthday: An Opera An opera in one act. Music by Frank Schiro, libretto by Shawn Churchman, additional material by Frank Schiro.

The story of Twice Upon A Birthday is an original idea of Frank Schiro and Shawn Churchman’s, and follows the magical, whimsical, and sometimes perilous journey of Molly and Michael Montgomery. Molly and Michael are twins who are celebrating their 10th birthday. As typical 10-year-olds, they are not really enjoying being with one another. Their mother, Marla has hired a magician for the event, Mit

rovsky. Our charming and somewhat befuddled magician promises wish-granting powers, so with an ancient spell and the help of a solar eclipse, the twins, much to their amazement, are granted their most cherished wishes. Molly is given the ability to fly, and meets up with Alize and Peregrine, two desperately bored clouds with an ulterior motive. Michael is whisked off to a super hero training camp where he meets Metamorpheus, a demanding, shape-shifting super hero trainer, who also has a hidden agenda. The twins get themselves into a lot of trouble, are able to escape and return home as a result of their unbreakable bond as twins, and ultimately learn that what they really value and needed all along was right in their own back yard.

From another recent performance of Twice Upon a Birthday:
I thought I’d share a quick story with you. Last Sunday, I took my 2-year granddaughter, Lyric, to Family Day at the Oklahoma City Art Museum. I didn’t know if she would sit through a nearly one hour production but her mom spent many summers in Cimarron Opera’s Cool Kids Camps in Norman and it seemed time to introduce Lyric to opera. She watched intently and quietly through “Twice Upon a Birthday.” Afterwards, she proclaimed that she “wiked (liked) it” but I wondered if she grasped the story at all.

Today I got a call from her mom. Apparently Lyric had picked up a pillow case, put it on her back and proclaimed that she was a super hero. Then she asked her mom if she could see a picture of the girl in the clouds and began flying around the house with her arms out. My daughter, Hilary wanted to know if I had any idea what she was talking about. J

Thanks for stirring her imagination. Your writer and performers should be very proud of their work.

From a recent performance of Twice Upon a Birthday:
From a teacher in Ponca City, OK. (They had students from First Lutheran join them for the performance.)

We thoroughly enjoyed the performance this year. In fact, one of the First Lutheran teachers went out of her way to stop me and thank me for inviting them again this year. She thought the opera was incredible and is hoping that we'll be doing this every year!! I'm ready to buy her tickets to an upcoming main stage production!!
