The Mechanics of Arch Assembly

This technical illustration demonstrates the traditional method of building a semi-circular masonry arch. It highlights the transition from a self-supported structure to a stable architectural element through the placement of the final stone. The image emphasizes the critical role of temporary internal support—known as centering—which holds the individual masonry units in place until the arch is completed and can support its own weight through compression.

Key Components

Key (Keystone): The wedge-shaped stone placed at the very top of the arch. It is the final piece inserted, effectively "locking" all other stones into position and allowing the structure to bear weight.

Voussoirs: The series of wedge-shaped bricks or stones that form the curve of the arch.

Temporary Wooden Structure: A wooden framework used to support the voussoirs during the construction process. This frame is removed only after the keystone is secured.

Impost: The projecting block or structural point on a wall where the arch rests. It acts as the transition between the vertical support and the curved arch.

Leveling Wedges: Small wooden blocks placed at the base of the centering to allow for fine height adjustments and to facilitate the easy removal of the frame once the masonry is set.

Went to check out a potential tuck pointing restoration job.

Such a beautiful home, sadly there was some work done on this one already by what we call in this trade “boots”

You can see where incorrect mortar was used and incorrect tooling for the joints. This can cause further damage as mortar and United

This is becoming more and more common due to uneducated bricklayers or just some “handyman” that thinks he can do anything and just wants your money.

We specialize in masonry cleaning as well.

Have some extra cleaner so figured I would test certain applications on my own home (it was built in the 70s, so she needs some love).

As you can see my concrete stoop and pad are extremely dirty and growing vegetation.

Gave her a masonry detergent bath and I think it came out pretty clean. Might even mix it a Kyle stronger and give it one more wash.

First picture not my work. Just the inspiration photo.

Words cannot describe how excited I am for this project.

A friend of mine reached out and asked if I do tile. But I’m pretty sure i have him sold on a concrete shower that resembles a giant piece of stone (will be like showering in a waterfall or cave.

Once he gets all the plumbing in order I’ll begin this project.

Stay tuned.

One of the posts from a page I follow to get some leads on work.

THIS STONE WALL CAN BE SAVED AND REBUILT.

It makes me sad to see so many people quick to pitch the idea of tearing out real stone just to replace it with boring retaining wall blocks (that are literally designed for ease of use for the average homeowner)

I don’t know these guys at all and I’m not going to out them. But it really is concerning how many people are in this trade without proper education on practices for building proper structures.

The limestone is probably going to be taken to the landfill and then a new wall with boring concrete block will take its place.

For anyone wondering. This wall probably lacks a tile drainage system and the neighboring fence footings are probably pushing into the backside of the limestone. There’s also a downspout on the neighbors home that drops right in front of the limestone. Quite a bit going on to aid in the failure of the wall.

At Sean Schafbuch Masonry, we believe family comes first. I mean, it’s the reason we wake up everyday and go to work to give them the best life possible right?

It was our employees wedding anniversary on Sunday so we decided to get him something from one of their favorite places.

Have a great night with the family buddy. You deserve it.

A helpful picture for those looking to get work done on their home or building.

Improper mortar usage can damage the affected area even further.

There’s a lot of companies out there that just want to get the job done as fast as possible, make the most they can and move onto the next without a care as to the quality of their work.

Use this as a guide next time when having your home or building inspected by a bricklayer.
