The Clark project — Phase 1 complete.

We excavated under an existing garage slab to create a walk-out basement entry. Hit a setback mid-pour, fixed it, and kept moving. New stairs, door, finished handrail.

We found something on the Clark project that the homeowners had no idea was there.

When we dug into the foundation for the new basement entry, we could see the garage roof trusses weren't supported the way they should have been when the house was built. They were bearing on the garage slab — about 4 inches of concrete poured to hold a car, not to carry a roof.

You could already see it in the ceiling. It had started to sag.

Here's Matt fixing it. Now that the new door and stairs are in, that load is sitting on a proper foundation instead of a slab. Done once, done right.

This is the part of remodeling most people never see, and it's exactly why we don't just close a wall back up and keep moving. If something's wrong behind there, we'd rather find it now than have you find it in five years.

Quick myth-buster: not every remodel needs a permit. Cosmetic work — paint, cabinets, flooring — usually doesn't. The second plumbing or electrical is involved, it does. And in Ogden City specifically, the requirements are stricter than most areas, so that's what we follow there regardless. Knowing the difference is what protects you..

Most contractors only show you the finished, pretty version. Here's the honest one: to build this basement we cut through the garage floor, formed the walls — and the first pour blew the forms out. That's the part nobody posts. So we regrouped and did it right, and now there are stairs heading down into a brand-new basement. Real projects have real moments. The difference is who's still there making it right.
