A stunning new video reveals an entire mountain range in China’s Guizhou province covered in solar panels, symbolizing the country’s aggressive push toward renewable energy. Once considered unsuitable for agriculture due to its high altitude and unpredictable weather, this rugged landscape has been transformed into a sprawling solar farm that stretches as far as the eye can see. What was once underused land is now a powerhouse of clean energy.
China’s solar journey in Guizhou began modestly in 2015, but by 2018, the region was generating around 1.75 million kilowatts of solar power annually. By 2020, that capacity soared past 10 million kilowatts, thanks to generous government subsidies, low-interest loans, and affordable land. By 2023, the province’s solar output hit 15 million kilowatts, and it’s still growing.
This local boom mirrors a national trend. As of 2024, China was responsible for 64% of all utility-scale solar and wind infrastructure under construction globally, totaling 339 gigawatt hours. In contrast, the next four countries combined — the U.S., Brazil, the U.K., and Spain — had only 72 gigawatt hours in progress. These figures highlight China’s commanding lead in the global clean energy race.
Although coal still accounts for 57% of the country’s electricity, its use is declining faster than expected. If current trends hold, China could reach its renewable energy targets ahead of its 2030 deadline and be well on its way toward President Xi's goal of carbon neutrality by 2060. Guizhou’s solar-coated mountains are a dramatic reminder of just how fast that shift is happening.
