Tip #1 – Radon and Air Quality: What You Can Do
Iowa consistently ranks among the top states for radon exposure and, unfortunately, cancer rates as a whole—with radon being a leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. This naturally occurring gas builds up in basements and lower levels of homes, often without warning.
If you haven’t tested your radon levels recently, consider picking up a digital radon monitor, one that gives instant readings (no mailing required)! A great example is the EcoQube: https://ecosense.io/products/ecoqube.
A device like this lets you check instant radon levels, but it’s also important to let it run for 7 to 30 days to track levels over time. Radon can fluctuate with changes in weather, air pressure, and how often your HVAC system runs, so collecting long-term data gives you a much clearer picture of your home’s air quality.
Speaking of your HVAC system, keeping your fan set to AUTO helps circulate air, which can slightly reduce radon buildup in stagnant areas.
If your radon levels come back high, while we specialize in HVAC services, we don’t provide radon mitigation. But we strongly recommend doing your research and reaching out to a certified mitigation company—it’s a precaution you might regret not taking down the road!
Bonus Tip: After buying a radon detector, you can loan it out to family and friends so they can check their homes too. It’s a great way to help keep the people you care about safe, while being cost efficient!
