Most people today would associate the theory of evolution with Charles Darwin, and with good reason: He was the first to point to natural selection as a fundamental mechanism. However, 50 years before Darwin, in 1809, it was a Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, who first put forward a robust scientific theory of biological evolution. What most people don't realize is that in his main work, the Philosophie zoologique, he professes the views of a theist and a Catholic. To learn more about Lamarck, his theory of evolution and his religious beliefs, check out the latest article on the Society of Catholic Scientists website.

The first to put forward a scientific theory of evolution was also a Catholic believer.
