Doing some research on Alzheimer's and Dementia and their connection with metabolic disorders of brain cells (i.e. insulin resistance) - see 'Type 3 Diabetes'.
But I also love that the literature then seems to back up anecdotal advice from Italian grandmas; most notably the use of natural foods/herbs for health.
We have known the use of certain substances to help in reducing effects of these metabolic disorders - in this case check out the list of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor agonist (PPAR agonist) sources in human diets from a 2008 paper:
"PPARγ-ligands were often identified in plants that are common food sources, including the tea plant (Camellia sinensis), soybeans (Glycine max), palm oil (Elaeis guineensis), ginger (Zingiber officinale), grapes and wine (Vitis vinifera), and a number of culinary herbs and spices (e.g. Origanum vulgare, Rosmarinus officinalis, Salvia officinalis, Thymus vulgaris)"
