πͺοΈ DONβT MESS WITH MAY: This is the average tornado risk for the month!
May is typically prime time for tornadoes in the U.S., when all the ingredients really start coming together. The threat shifts into the Plains and Midwest, as Tornado Alley really begins to wake up. Though the actual outcome of May can vary greatly as we have seen in years past.
That said, we tend to see more instability this time of year, while the jet stream starts lifting north creating that overlap that can lead to some of the most dangerous setups of the year.
It also brings more of those boundary-driven days where leftover boundaries, heat, and humidity can quickly turn a βquietβ setup into something severe. The Plains are usually ground zero, but tornadoes can happen in many areas this month.
