⚠️ Saturday Severe Weather Outlook ⚠️
The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of western Nebraska and southwest South Dakota under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms on Saturday. While not everyone will see storms, conditions appear favorable for some strong to severe thunderstorms to develop during the afternoon and evening hours.
A dryline is expected to set up across the region Saturday afternoon. As a weather disturbance moves overhead, thunderstorms are likely to develop across the Nebraska Panhandle and spread into southwest South Dakota. There is still some uncertainty regarding exactly how many storms will form, especially farther south, but confidence is higher that storms will develop across western Nebraska.
The primary concerns with any severe thunderstorms will be large hail and damaging wind gusts. Some storms could produce hail large enough to damage vehicles, roofs, and crops. Strong wind gusts may also be capable of downing tree limbs and causing isolated power outages.
While a tornado cannot be completely ruled out, the overall tornado threat currently appears low. Forecast models suggest that conditions are more supportive of hail and wind-producing storms rather than tornadoes. We will continue to monitor trends as newer forecast data becomes available.
If you have outdoor plans Saturday afternoon or evening, be sure to keep an eye on the forecast and have a way to receive weather warnings. Check back with the Nebraska Storm Chasing Network for updates as we continue to track this developing severe weather threat.
