A little piece of Florida history we ran into yesterday 🌲

While working in the woods, we came across some old “catface” stumps — something you don’t see very often anymore.

These marks come from a process called the Herty system, which was used years ago to collect pine resin for making products like turpentine and rosin. Workers would remove a section of bark and cut a slanted groove, called a streak, into the tree. A small piece of metal was placed below the cut to guide the sap into a tin cup.

When one cut stopped producing sap, another was made just above it. Over time, the tree would end up with rows of parallel slashes running up the trunk. Those streaks looked like a cat’s whiskers — that’s where the name “catface” comes from.

Pretty cool to still find these signs of Florida’s old-school turpentine industry out in the woods today.
