Trading old for new – During the current refueling outage at Browns Ferry Unit 2, 320 new fuel assemblies are placed in the reactor core to prepare for the next two-year cycle of generating carbon-free, low-cost energy for the region. Highly-trained refuel floor technicians use specialized equipment make room for the new fuel by removing older fuel assemblies from the reactor core and place them in the spent fuel pool. Also scheduled during this outage - installation of a final round of modifications that will make Unit 2 the third and final Browns Ferry unit able to generate more electricity than ever. Once testing is completed on Unit 2, Browns Ferry will able to generate enough additional electricity from all three units to power an added 280,000 homes.
