Weekend gold rush recipe time! - Miner's Delight Layered Stew Pie
A Gold Rush Era Recipe from My Granddaddy's Mining Camp

The Story:
It was a chilly winter evening in 1885 at our Sierra Nevada mining camp. Granddaddy Jack "Lucky Strike" Murphy had just struck gold dust in Coyote Creek! To celebrate, my grandma whipped up this hearty Miner's Delight Layered Stew Pie. Prospectors from nearby camps gathered 'round, tired faces aglow by campfire light, savoring every bite.

Ingredients: (adjust as needed)
- 1 lb ground beef (we used leftover hunting meat)
- 1 large onion, diced (wild onions grew near camp)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced (traded from a nearby ranch)
- 2 medium carrots, peeled and sliced
- 2 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced
- 1 cup cooked beans (pinto beans stored from summer harvest)
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup crushed crackers (made from flour traded with locals)
- 6 slices of bacon, crumbled

Directions:
1. Preheat campfire Dutch oven (or home oven to 375°F)
2. Brown ground beef in pot over medium campfire heat. Drain excess fat.
3. Add diced onion, minced garlic. Cook until onion's translucent.
4. Add sliced carrots, potatoes, cooked beans, beef broth, thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer 30 minutes.
5. In separate bowl, mix crushed crackers and crumbled bacon.

6. Layering Time:
- Meat mixture in Dutch oven (or 9x13 inch baking dish)
- Half of cracker-bacon mixture on top
- Repeat layers: meat mixture then remaining cracker-bacon mixture
7. Cover Dutch oven (or cover baking dish with foil). Bake 25-30 minutes.
8. Remove cover, bake additional 10-15 minutes until crust golden brown.
Serve hot, partner!

Y'all won't believe the tale I'm fixin' to spin...

Back in my prime panning days I got myself lost in the dang Hassayampa Wilderness for a whole damn week!
Was out prospectin' for gold, sluice box on my back, when I took a wrong turn near the river. Next thing I knew, I was deeper in them woods than a tick on a c**n dog's bu****le!

All I had with me was my trusty sluice box, a canteen of water, and one loaf of my wife's famous homemade banana bread – which she calls ‘Gold 'n Paydirt banana bread’, on account of them golden raisins and ground cinnamon.
I thought for sure I'd be eatin' my boots by day three, but that bread... LORD HAVE MERCY! It was like sluice-boxin' for calories – every bite yielded a new payload of energy. Not only did I survive but I came out them woods with crumbs in my beard and two and a half ounces of chunky pickers!

I’m fittin to share the recipe with y’all, but only because the misses gave her permission first.
Fill up your stomache, then your pan, and strike gold with this recipe, partner!

Gold 'n Paydirt Banana Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
* 4 large ripe bananas, mashed (like gold nuggets from my claim)
* 1 cup honey (harvested from local bees near my mining spot)
* 1/2 cup melted pure coconut oil (smooth like river rocks)
* 2 large eggs (from my prospector friend's farm)
* 2 tsp ground cinnamon (harvested from Ceylon trees)
* 1/2 tsp salt (from natural Himalayan deposits)
* 1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour (milled from stone-ground grains)
* 1 cup golden raisins (sun-dried like gold in the desert)
* 1 tsp vanilla extract (from real Madagascar beans)
* Walnuts optional (like extra nuggets hidden in the bread)

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (like heat from a desert gold hunt).
2. Mix bananas, honey, oil, eggs, cinnamon, and salt in a large sluice... err, bowl.
3. Add flour, golden raisins, and vanilla extract. Stir until combined.
4. Fold in walnuts (if using), like adding gravel to my prospecting pan.
5. Pour into a greased 9x5 loaf pan (like a gold bar mold).
6. Bake 55-60 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean (pit it to the gold test).
7. Let cool, then slice and serve – pure gold n’ paydirt!

Don't Tell the Claim Jumpers...

Partner, I'm only sharing this with you because I think you can keep a secret. Abigail "Lucky" Thompson's 1852 Molasses Gold Rush Cookies... these delicacies may just be the real reason I’m finding pickers bigger than the peanuts in your snickers! Also they ain’t fake food, so you’ll be kicking around and finding gold a lot longer

Molasses Ginger "Prospector's Luck" Cookies

Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (freshly milled or sifted from whole grains)
- 1 cup packed muscovado sugar (or brown sugar made by boiling down sugarcane juice)
- 1/2 cup rendered lard or beef tallow (butter if ya have to)
- 2 large eggs from backyard chickens
- 2 tsp ground ginger (freshly grated)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (from whole sticks)
- 1/2 tsp salt (harvested from salt springs or sea salt)
- 2 tbsp blackstrap molasses

Instructions:
1. Preheat wood-fired oven to 375°F (or a solar oven for those in Arizona)
2. Whisk dry ingredients together.
3. Cream lard/tallow, sugar, eggs, ginger, cinnamon, and molasses.
4. Combine wet/dry ingredients until dough forms.
5. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness, cut into rounds.
6. Bake 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned.

Adding the "Lucky Nugget" 🏆
Place a mini Reese's Cup on top of each cookie immediately after baking – the warmth will slightly melt the chocolate, revealing the ‘gold nugget’ stuck in the "dirt"!

If the other miners find out I'm crediting these cookies over my mining skills or even my trusty Henry Rifle, I'll be run out of town. But honestly, they're more reliable than a dowsing rod and give ya more energy than sippin' fresh sugar cane juice after a long day of sluicin'
Feel free to substitute if’n you can’t find these raw ingredients, things just ain’t like they used to be, right? 🤔
Want to bake a batch with me at my gold claim campsite, partner?

Tip: "Pan like you mean it, but not like you're swishing a giant margarita!"

What TO DO:
- Put Tom Petty on the radio
- Hold pan mostly level
- Gentle circular motions
- Let water do the work

What NOT TO DO:
- Spin pan wildly like a roulette wheel
- Splash water everywhere like a kid in a bathtub
- Dump out half the pan and expect gold nuggets to jump into your hands magically
