An old Guatemalan man named Vega taught me how to do drywall in the summer of 2001. Vega was hands down the most widely talented craftsperson I’ve ever known and he’s the only person in 25 years that was willing to teach me enough to get myself out of the labor trap. He’s probably one of maybe 4 people in my whole 25 year career that wasn’t a morally corrupt and exploitative dickehead.
Vega was understandably apprehensive until I was able to get the nerve together to explain to him that I wasn’t a rich white kid from Orange County and that I had in fact been an undocumented immigrant for most of my high school carrier and that hadn’t left me with many professional options. But as soon as he knew he was determined to teach me the dark art of drywall like I was one of his kids. ( Vega and his 4 sons, all their framing gear and their company microwave would all commute 50 miles to work in a Honda civic). I lost touch with Vega shortly after that project was finished but I’ll always remember him and his sons for their patience and generosity. His plan was to retire back to Guatemala and to renovate the hotel he owned there and I hope he managed to make it back home.
If you’re happy about the prospect of a brown person free country, please don’t call me in 2 years when there’s maybe 10 white dudes left in the city that are under the age of 60 and still physically able to finish drywall .
You can get it how you live it, pick yourself up by your bootstraps and Do It Yourself.

Just a Ginger appreciation post. I really hit the jackpot when I told those dudes at the gym that I’d find her a better home instead of them putting her down. That was 13 years ago and she’s still the BEST free dog from a teriyaki restaurant in St. John’s that I’ve ever had. .Johns # Gingersmallsistheillst!

Trying to get this yard tidied up and dog proofed has been unreal. The last owners put up zombie traps which took some undoing and we’ve used it to store all sorts BS. Now we have a fenced in yard and we captured a pretty cool greenhouse which will eventually house a hot tub which should keep us and some baby plants safe and warm for the winter. 🤦🏻‍♀️

We bought that patio cover kit 5 years ago( before we even owned a house) for 100$. It’s been under a tarp at two houses but today was the day we set it free. I also found an Usher CD out front of the post office on 102nd… pretty cool day. &liftweightsallwinter!
