Heating oil is naturally a light gold color, but it is dyed red to clearly distinguish it from diesel fuel. Since the two fuels are so similar, the dye helps identify it as home heating oil rather than taxed diesel fuel used in vehicles. The added red dye does not affect its performance or quality.
