So a customer just sent me a photo of his electric usage over the last year. Said "I wonder what happened in June?". (He knows what happened) Watch the dark blue line on the photo after June

Well in June we replaced both of his original systems with right sized equipment and furnaces. Dropped both builder systems from 2T to 1.5 T. Installed a 40k, 80% furnace in the attic, completely replaced ductwork in attic, installed oversized media filters, and added zoning to the master bedroom. Installed a 30k, 96% furnace in the crawl, replaced return ducting and added oversized filter in crawl.

He is happy.

The proof is in the pudding. It is fairly easy to achieve these results with good design including Load Calculations, Blower Door Testing, appropriate Duct Designs and filter upgrades.

2/17/2021.
The Raleigh-Durham area is preparing for an ice storm tonight through tomorrow (Thursday). If you lose power and heat please keep these things in mind to keep you SAFE.
*Do not use your gas stove or oven to attempt to keep warm.
*Do not bring an appliance inside that was meant to be used outside (porch heaters, grills, camp stoves, etc.)
*And as always, stay home if you can.
*If you must venture out, be mindful of downed power lines and definitely do not drive across one.

Stay safe friends, we will get through this.

Expect the worst, hope for the best.

Public Service Announcement.

Remember the V in HVAC. V stands for ventilation. Your dryer exhaust duct is a part of the ventilation system for your home.

Have your dryer duct cleaned by your HVAC professional at least once per year.

This customer had a VERY close call on Friday.
Got a call Friday afternoon that they had a burning smell coming from their dryer.

Upon arrival we began to investigate and disassemble the dryer. As you can see there was a small fire in the bottom of the dryer that scorched the top layer of lint that had built up in the dryer.

The dryer vent was nearly completely clogged due to a very poor installation when the house was built and the lint had no where to go except into the dryer cabinet.

Additionally, the exhaust was hidden under a deck with lattice surround so the condition of the exhaust was impossible to see.

I had replaced the heating element in the dryer about a year ago and cleaned it out so all this lint in about a year. (We had sucked some out prior to taking the photo)

Any way. We disassembled the dryer vent completely and cleaned it out and reassembled. Put the dryer back together and back up and running.

Note: dryer disassembly and reassembly is not really our thing, but was necessary with this one.

We will be back next week to completely rebuild the exhaust vent to meet modern code standards. The current vent is several bid no-nos

These folks had a very lucky day.

Scientific Comfort Services is happy to provide dryer vent cleaning services

I didn't get before pictures, but I am pretty happy on how this job turned out. First job using wyes and triangle distribution boxes. Hard supply and return trunks. Flex off of triangle boxes and wyes. Duct test and results in a few weeks. Feeling pretty good about it though. 5 buckets of mastic for the trunks and 8 supplies
