Our co-founders, Eric Edwards, MD, PhD and Dr. Frank Gupton, had the honor of touring Senator Mark Warner; Linda Cruz-Carnall Regional Director, US Economic Development Administration; Caren Merrick, Secretary of Commerce and Trade; and other esteemed leaders involved with the Build Back Better Regional Challenge through Virginia Commonwealth University's Medicines for All Institute at the Advanced Pharmaceutical Development Center. Following the tour, our CEO Eric Edwards, MD, PhD had the opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion about the importance of the Build Back Better Regional Challenge and how the award is making generational investments into regional economies, driving economic recovery, and putting communities across the country on the path toward economic competitiveness.

Today’s events are in celebration of the transformative Build Back Better Regional Challenge grant awarded to the Alliance for Building Better Medicine, a coalition of public and private sector stakeholders in the Richmond-Petersburg region. Phlow serves as part of the founding board of the Alliance for Building Better Medicine and is proud to work with the growing coalition as it leverages the Build Back Better Regional Challenge grant to create a reliable supply of safe, high-quality, and affordable medicines.

This morning we celebrated the milestone announcement from President Joe Biden and the U.S. Department of Commerce's U.S. Economic Development Administration that public and private sector stakeholders in the Richmond-Petersburg region, working together as the Alliance for Building Better Medicine, will receive $52,942,702 as a winner of the national Build Back Better regional challenge with Governor Glenn Youngkin. During this celebration, Governor Glenn Youngkin gave an official proclamation recognizing September 8, 2022 as National Essential Medicine Shortage Awareness Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia and called this observance to the attention of our citizens. This is a day designed to acknowledge a problem that many Americans will face at some point in their lives and work together toward a life-saving solution.

Today at Phlow, we are observing National Essential Medicine Shortage Awareness Day (NEMSAD), a national observance day occurring each year on September 8, to bring awareness to the ongoing essential medicine shortage crisis in the United States and to create solutions that result in a reliable supply of high-quality medicines for all Americans. While medicine shortages have been a persistent challenge for the U.S. healthcare system for more than a decade, the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified vulnerabilities in the overall supply chain.

We stand strong in our support of NEMSAD and are proud to join its call to action to create domestic supply chain resiliency and reliability for our country’s most vital medicines. For us, NEMSAD is every day, and we are fortunate and honored to work with like-minded organizations who are focused and passionate about solving this issue.
