Is Duke Energy Controlling Your Air Conditioner?
If your air conditioner seems to stop cooling during the hottest part of the day, it may not be a problem with your HVAC system at all.
Many homeowners are enrolled in Duke Energy’s EnergyWise Home® program, which allows Duke to temporarily cycle participating air conditioners and heat pumps during periods of high electricity demand.
What does that mean?
• Your thermostat may still be calling for cooling.
• The indoor fan may continue to run.
• The outdoor unit may be temporarily shut off by Duke Energy.
• Your home may take longer to cool during extreme heat.
The program helps reduce strain on the electrical grid and provides participating customers with a bill credit, but it can sometimes be mistaken for an HVAC issue.
If your system is struggling to keep up, especially during peak summer temperatures, it’s worth checking whether you’re enrolled in an energy management program before scheduling a service call.
Not sure if your system is participating? Look for an EnergyWise control device near your outdoor unit or contact Duke Energy for more information.
