Sixty days ago we started posting with one rule: be useful, or be quiet.

Since then it's been moss and metal, valleys and ventilation, fir needles and flashing — the actual stuff that decides whether an Umpqua Valley roof makes it through winter. This is what a roof looks like the day before it looks like anything.

Here's the arithmetic nobody puts on the brochure.

A treed lot here needs its gutters cleared at least twice a year — usually more if firs hang over the roofline. Quality guards cut that to an occasional light brush-off, which means they typically recoup their cost in roughly three to six years of skipped cleanings.

The harder number to price: one clog you don't get in November is an overflow you don't have in January — the kind that rots fascia or floods a crawlspace. One prevented disaster can cover the guards outright.

Most gutter guards were designed for places with leaves. Douglas County has Douglas firs — and fir needles slide through screens, mat on foam, and defeat half the products on the market.
