Morning discussion on manufacturer Specifications and tolerances! Whether you have a Cla-val, Baily, Singer or any other valve you must make sure you follow their guidelines. In the first slide you will see a Cla-val cut sheet with two particular spots circled. The upper in yellow is the stem nut and this holds the entire assembly together. When assembling the internal assembly you MUST make sure this can't loosen during operation. The second circle in red is the spacer washers between the disk retainer and disk guide. Moving to slide two, you can see this customer had their valve assembly loosen during operation subsequently allowing the disc to come out of the disc retainer. This was due to an improper rebuild they did a few weeks prior.

Let's talk PMCS!! This is a prime example of the idea " it's hasn't ran, so it should be good". We are here to tell you that lag valves need love too!! Don't forget to inspect all valves, even the ones that might not be the hard working ones. In these pictures you can see the significant build up in the dome on the lag valve. This had gotten to the point it couldn't modulate more than about 15%. It's easy to forget about the valves that never run but these are the safety nets of a distribution system and the true workhorses when needed.

One of the biggest culprits for valve damage is Cavitation. Here is a quick guide from -val on some operational guidelines. We have seen thousands of valves with internal damage due to improper tuning. Sometimes a simple adjustment can significantly increase the life and operational accuracy of a pressure reducing valve.
