Our 2025 “Where Are They Now?” Calendar (pictured below) was such a huge hit that we’ve decided to bring it back for 2027!

And this is where YOU come in!

We’re looking for 12 Saving Grace alumni to feature — one special adoption story for each month of the year.

If you’ve adopted a mini from SGMHR, we’d love to see what their happily-ever-after looks like today! 🥰

❤️ A short update about their life since adoption. Tell us what “living their best adopted life” looks like! New friends, favorite activities, funny habits, special accomplishments, adventures or simply how loved and spoiled they are — we want to hear it all!

Only 12 spots are available, so unfortunately we may not be able to include every submission, but we can’t wait to see where some of our former residents are today.

We talk a lot about food, exercise, and veterinary care when it comes to keeping dogs healthy. But research suggests another part of their lives deserves attention too: social connection. 🐕❤️🐕

Studies examining canine health and aging have found associations between a dog's social environment and measures of health and well-being. That doesn't mean simply getting your dog another dog will make them live longer.

The connection is more complicated.

Positive relationships can naturally provide many things that support a dog's well-being. Playing means movement. Exploring and sniffing together provides mental stimulation. Positive companionship may also help some dogs feel more secure and less stressed.

Even quiet companionship can matter. Two dogs don't need to wrestle around the house all day to have a meaningful relationship. Sometimes simply resting together, walking together, or calmly sharing the same space is enough.

But there's an important exception: not every dog wants canine friends.

Some dogs prefer people. Others are selective about which dogs they tolerate. Senior dogs may appreciate quieter interactions, while anxious or reactive dogs can find forced introductions stressful.

So the goal isn't to give every dog a "best friend."

It's to provide safe, positive social experiences that match the individual dog's personality.

Good health isn't only about what's in the food bowl or how many miles a dog walks.

Sometimes, who's walking beside them matters too. 🐾

Ever notice your dog leaning into a chest scratch but pulling away when you reach for their paws? 🐕❤️

Dogs don't experience every touch the same way, and there isn't one universal "petting map" that applies to every dog.

Many dogs enjoy gentle strokes or scratches around the chest, shoulders, back, and sometimes behind the ears. When they're comfortable, they may lean toward your hand, relax their body, or actively return for more.

Other areas deserve more caution. Paws, tail, legs, hips, face, and belly can be sensitive for some dogs, especially if they're unfamiliar with being handled there or if the area is painful.

And a dog rolling onto their back doesn't automatically mean "rub my belly." Sometimes it can be an invitation, but body language and context matter.

A simple way to find out what your dog prefers is the consent test: pet them gently for a few seconds, stop, and see what they do.

If they move closer, nudge your hand, or clearly seek more contact, that's a good sign. If they turn away, move off, become tense, or repeatedly avoid your hand, give them some space.

Most importantly, let your individual dog decide. Their favorite spot might be completely different from another dog's.

Learning those little preferences isn't just about giving better scratches. It's part of understanding how your dog communicates with you. 🐾
