This is a great example of heading off a future service call and a potential hot night.

At first glance, this capacitor looks fine.

It’s rated for 40 µF, and when tested it measured 37 µF. Most homeowners (and unfortunately some technicians) would see that and move on.

But here’s the problem:

This capacitor has a ±6% tolerance.

That means anything below 37.6 µF is technically out of specification.

This one tested at 37.0 µF.

Will it fail today? Probably not.

Will it continue to weaken every time your system starts and stops in the Florida heat? Absolutely.

And when capacitors fail, they rarely send a warning text first. They typically fail on the hottest day of the year when your system is working its hardest.

That’s why preventative maintenance matters.

During a maintenance visit, we’re not just looking for parts that have already failed. We’re looking for components that are beginning to fail so we can address them before you’re sitting in a 90 degree house waiting for emergency service.

A small issue caught early is usually inexpensive and convenient.

Preventative maintenance isn’t about selling parts. It’s about preventing uncomfortable surprises.

This capacitor was still functioning but failure is eminent.

It’s that time of year to get your spring tune up done before the oppressive heat and humidity show up. The heat and humidity add an additional element to your system that could cause a poorly maintained system to fail.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR HOMEOWNERS & HVAC TECHS:

Stop pouring bleach into your A/C condensate drain lines.

Over the years I’ve seen a growing number of underground condensate drains and copper lines develop leaks and corrosion issues after repeated bleach treatments.
This is when your underground chase is also part of the drain. You have no way of knowing for sure.
While bleach may temporarily kill slime and algae, the chlorides can eventually contribute to copper pitting and deterioration especially in warm, damp drain chases common in Florida homes.
A safer and very effective alternative:
• White vinegar
• 3% hydrogen peroxide
Both help disrupt the gelling biofilm that clogs condensate drains without being nearly as aggressive on copper.
Recommended maintenance:
• Pour 1–2 cups into the condensate drain
• Let sit 20–30 minutes
• Flush with warm water
• Repeat monthly during cooling season

Small maintenance habits can prevent:
✔ Drain clogs
✔ Water damage
✔ Float switch trips
✔ Premature copper failures
Sometimes the old “standard practice” isn’t the best long-term solution.

Thinking of changing your unit out?

Regardless of the brand, size and efficiency chosen; I highly recommend upgrading the filter box to a minimum of 2”.

This will give you more surface area, your unit will actually run more efficiently because it no longer has that choke point and you can go longer between changes.
