Our students visited the Marine Biology program at Wisconsin Lutheran College and had the chance to meet with Dr. Ethan Degner, the head of the program. WLC’s Marine Biology program provides exceptional experiential learning opportunities—from diving and snorkeling in diverse marine environments to exploring intertidal zones, collecting and identifying marine organisms, and engaging in hands-on lab research.

We also had the opportunity to see the research they conduct using data collected from coral reef ecosystems in Grenada, giving our students a real-world glimpse into how marine data is analyzed.

These experiences in Wisconsin and beyond at WLC seem like a match to help expand our ROV development within our Dreaming Bigger, Diving Deeper project and the initiative.

Students asked thoughtful questions and received valuable feedback, everything from sensor integration to lighting ideas, and the idea of exploring photogrammetry for underwater mapping.

A huge thank you to WLC and Dr. Degner for inviting us, sharing your expertise, and giving our students a deeper look into marine science while allowing us to share our work as well.

PINKrov: Engineering with Purpose

Our ROV program is evolving. Working with Dr. Ashley Lemke, we're shifting from a competition-focused to a purpose-driven approach to engineering. PINKrov uses competitions as validation checkpoints, not endpoints. Students now design for real customers, solving actual problems rather than chasing trophies.

This approach reflects Joost Allard's vision in his June 2025 article "Coaching Teachers to Thrive in Student-Led Learning Environments", where authentic projects build collaboration, resilience, and critical thinking alongside technical skills.

PINKrov isn't just about underwater robots. It's about giving students experiences that matter beyond the classroom.

Tonight at Science on Tap at Milwaukee Public Museum, we were proud to showcase our project during “Our Lakes, Our Science: Underwater Archaeology in the Great Lakes.”

Our team held down our own corner of the museum, giving the team the opportunity to share their work before and after Dr. Lemke’s talk. It was incredible to see how many people were excited about what we are building and about our growing collaboration with Dr. Lemke and her University of Wisconsin Milwaukee team.

Nibi is fully outfitted with a Cerulean Sonar Omniscan 450 FS, Cerulean Sonar ROV Mk III, Blue Robotics Ping360 and Ping Sonar, a GoPro Hero 13 (currently uncased), and several DeepWater Exploration exploreHD 3.0 cameras.
