Happy 40th work anniversary, Mark!

Mark Adler, PE, is responsible for project management across engineering site and utility work, as well as overseeing design production, permitting, construction administration, and business development. Reflecting on his time at George F. Young, Mark shared, “What I enjoy most about G*Y is the people - co-workers, clients, agency permitting personnel, and contractors. I also appreciate the wide variety of private land development and public infrastructure projects the engineering team supports in Sarasota, Manatee, and Desoto counties.”

Outside the office, Mark values time spent with family and friends. As a man of strong faith, he is dedicated to his Catholic beliefs and maintains an active lifestyle through running, fitness, golf, and following both college and professional football and Major League Baseball. Mark is also an avid reader, especially of American history, and keeps his passion for cars alive through subscriptions to multiple magazines.

Throughout his four decades at G*Y, Mark has taken pride in helping clients realize their project visions, from conception to construction. “Every time I drive by a completed project in one of our local communities, it’s a highlight and a reminder of how fortunate I am to have been a part of so many.”

Last week, our survey team attended the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society (FSMS) Annual Conference in Miami, FL. They participated in courses focused on survey education and professional development, explored exhibits showcasing advanced technology, and networked with fellow industry professionals.

The George F. Young survey team recently completed data acquisition and mapping at a remote, active mining site operated by Edgar Mines in Hawthorne, FL.

To meet project needs, the team employed an adaptive multibeam bathymetric and LiDAR survey strategy using a compact unmanned surface vessel (USV) and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Our work prioritized the safe acquisition of bathymetric and LiDAR data in a challenging waterbody environment with steep shorelines, limited launch access, dredging activity, and variable site conditions. This approach produced a flexible survey workflow and deliverables that supported engineering review, dredging quantity analysis, progress monitoring, and documentation of existing site conditions.

George F. Young was contracted by St. Petersburg College to map the locations of all underground utilities on its 30+ acre Seminole Campus in Seminole, FL.

The utilities mapped included electric, cable TV, gas, fiber optics, gravity sanitary, force main sewer, potable water, reclaimed water, and chiller lines. Our SUE crews used ground-penetrating radar, electronic locating equipment, duct rodders, and vacuum excavation trucks to accurately locate, paint, and flag all on-site underground utilities. Our survey team then collected comprehensive data to produce a detailed utility map overlaid on an aerial image of the campus.

Nathaniel Barnes, PLS, joins our survey team as a Project Manager, bringing over six years of industry experience. His background spans heavy construction in Oak Ridge, TN, to transportation projects on Colorado’s eastern plains, giving him a wide range of knowledge. Nathan values the opportunity to have worked alongside many outstanding surveyors across the country. At G*Y, he looks forward to contributing to the company’s legacy, built on a long history in Florida and a strong reputation among surveyors statewide. Nathan is passionate about surveying, where every project is unique and provides an opportunity to apply critical thinking to deliver the best solution.

Outside of work, Nathan enjoys spending time with his dog, Beans, as well as walking, biking, and skiing with his wife.

When asked for his best professional advice, Nathan shared, “Action promotes more action; decision produces decision; living generates life.”

George F Young provided civil engineering, utilities, and survey services for the Orlando Health Institute Square in St Petersburg, FL. The complex includes a Women’s Pavilion, Medical Pavilion, Imaging Center, Cancer Research Institute, and parking garage.
