Made something special for America’s 250th Birthday. 🇺🇸
This large custom Fourth of July sign was built for James Burns’ annual Independence Day display.
It features an eagle, patriotic details, and 1776–2026 to mark 250 years of America. Cut from steel here at Mad Dog Metalworks and finished in a durable textured granite coating built to hold up outdoors.
Proud to have one of my pieces included in a display that brings the community together to celebrate Independence Day.
I’ll post a final photo once it is installed in the full display.
Custom metal signs, patriotic décor, business pieces, and one-off builds — message Mad Dog Metalworks to bring your idea to life.

Some projects mean a little more than others.

For the past several months, I've had the privilege of building one of these Battlefield Crosses every month for a retired Marine here in San Angelo named James Burns.

If you've never heard of James, he has dedicated a portion of his yard to honoring America's fallen heroes. Month after month, he adds another Battlefield Cross to his memorial—not because he knew these men and women personally, but because he believes every one of them deserves to be remembered.

This month's cross honors PVT Ernest Burns, who gave his life in service to our country.

As a veteran myself, it's difficult to describe what it means to know something built in my little garage becomes part of a tribute like this. These aren't just another metal art project to me. Each one represents a life of service, sacrifice, and a family forever changed.

James, thank you for trusting me to build these each month. Your dedication to honoring our nation's heroes is inspiring, and I'm grateful to play a small part in helping ensure their memory lives on.

If you have a few minutes, I've attached a news story about James and the memorial he's built. Take the time to watch it. I think you'll understand why it's such an honor for me to build these.

Patriotism isn't always about grand gestures. Sometimes it's simply making sure the names of our fallen heroes continue to be spoken.

May we never forget those who gave everything so the rest of us could live free.

God bless our fallen heroes, their families, and the United States of America.

Spent a little time in the shop this week working on something new.

I got tired of seeing those flimsy burger presses that flex the first time you lean on them, so I figured I'd build one the way I thought it should be built.

Meet The Texas Press.

Made from 1/4" steel and weighing in at just over 3½ pounds, it's built to make the perfect smash burger without bending, flexing, or wearing out. The cool-touch spring handle keeps your hand comfortable, and the weight does most of the work for you.

I build everything here in my garage in San Angelo, one piece at a time. I enjoy creating products that are overbuilt, useful, and made to last a lifetime—not something you'll replace next summer.

I may make a small batch of these if there's enough interest.

What do you think? Anything you'd add before I call this one finished?

Rec Tech Garage is getting a new name.

The metal sign and fabrication side of the business is now becoming Mad Dog Metalworks.

Same local craftsmanship, same heavy-gauge steel, same custom work — just a name that fits the direction this business is going.

I’ll be focusing on custom metal signs, CNC plasma art, garage/man cave pieces, ranch and business signs, and small fabrication projects.

And yes, Kramer had some influence on the name.

Proud of this one. I just finished this 3D, two-layer metal piece with fully customizable Govee LED backlighting—built as a university acceptance gift for a family member.
This is the kind of work I love doing. If you’ve got an idea you want brought to life in metal, send it my way—I’d be happy to make it happen.
