We get this question all the time.
Open cell versus closed cell.
🟢 Use OPEN-CELL spray foam when:
Best for: Interior spaces + sound control
✔️ Walls & ceilings (inside the building envelope)
✔️ Attics (especially vented or conditioned attics)
✔️ Soundproofing between rooms
✔️ Budget-friendly jobs
Why it works:
• Expands a lot → fills every crack and crevice
• Excellent air seal
• Great sound absorption
• Lower cost than closed cell
• Allows moisture to pass through (breathable)
Keep in mind:
❌ Not a v***r barrier
❌ Not ideal where moisture is present
❌ Lower R-value per inch
⸻
🔵 Use CLOSED-CELL spray foam when:
Best for: Strength, moisture control & extreme conditions
✔️ Basements & crawl spaces
✔️ Metal buildings & shops
✔️ Pole barns & agricultural buildings
✔️ Exterior walls
✔️ Well houses
Why it works:
• High R-value
• Acts as an air barrier AND v***r barrier
• Adds structural strength to walls/metal
Keep in mind:
❌ Higher cost
❌ Less sound absorption than open cell
⸻
🧠 Quick rule of thumb:
• Dry + interior = Open Cell
• Wet, metal, exterior, or strength needed = Closed Cell
If you want, tell me the space (house, shop, barn, attic, well house, etc.) and I’ll tell you exactly which one you should use — no guessing 😎
