It’s and today we’re featuring grantee, Home Start, which is approaching their second . This San Diego solar project, which was supported by a $11,645 grant from BQuest Foundation, is creating savings that are being reinvested into Home Start’s mission to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and their communities. Home Start is a child abuse prevention and treatment agency, and has strengthened and developed San Diego’s families, communities and systems of care since 1972.
“All of us at Home Start are most grateful for this grant to have solar panels installed at our newest multi-unit property. This location will soon be occupied by young women and children who are coming out of homelessness. Savings from having solar power are going directly back into supporting our life-changing programs to serve more families in need,” said Laura Tancredi-Baese, Chief Executive Officer of Home Start.
While Los Angeles continues to battle the devastating monstrous fires, San Diego has been battling fossil fueled fires across the county all week as has Riverside County. The “Border 2 Fire” has burned over 6,500 acres, causing unhealthy air quality for much of San Diego and northern Mexico. Some schools have canceled classes, disrupting parents' work schedules and forcing kids indoors. For some families, school is the only place a child gets a warm meal, and that gets taken away during disasters.
Fires in California in January are not typical. This is not the future we want. We must hold our elected officials and corporations accountable to act on climate. We can also take individual actions to help create a more just and livable future.
