This weekend, San Diegans can check out the free event in Solana Beach where attendees will learn from local clean energy experts, Bill Powers, Lane Sharman and our executive director, Tara Hammond.

The workshop is intended to help homeowners, renters, landlords, businesses and nonprofits learn about opportunities to go solar before recently-approved federal changes impact the federal tax credit for clean energy systems, making solar 30-60% more expensive. This isn't a sale pitch, rather it's an information sharing session where you can have your clean energy questions answered.

U.S. Representative Mike Levin, representing California's 49th District (North County San Diego and South Orange County), held his 123rd town hall in Encinitas on Saturday, which was focused around the federal Reconciliation Bill. Rep. Levin invited a handful of community members to speak about the different sections of the bill and how the bill would impact lives locally.

Our founder and executive director, Tara Hammond, was invited to speak about how the bill would negatively impact the cost of clean energy projects, raising electricity bills for everyone, increasing climate injustices, accelerating the climate crisis, cutting green jobs stimulating the economy and taking away clean energy education.

Here's a link from Citizens Climate Lobby to email your senator, letting them know you want to keep clean energy tax credits: www.citizensclimatelobby.org/get-loud-take-action/protect-ira-tax-credits

Other community members spoke about how food stamps, medicare and special education will negatively be impacted if this bill passes in its current form, which will be devastating for so many millions of Americans and people living here.

We appreciate Rep. Levin's leadership on this important bill (he tried proposing a common sense amendment, which wasn't given the opportunity to be heard as this was rammed through the House) and for taking time to speak to and hear from his constituents. Throughout his career, he's been a passionate leader on environmental protection, clean energy and combatting the climate crisis.

It’s and today we’re featuring grantee, Home Start, which is approaching their second . This San Diego solar project, which was supported by a $11,645 grant from BQuest Foundation, is creating savings that are being reinvested into Home Start’s mission to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and their communities. Home Start is a child abuse prevention and treatment agency, and has strengthened and developed San Diego’s families, communities and systems of care since 1972.

“All of us at Home Start are most grateful for this grant to have solar panels installed at our newest multi-unit property. This location will soon be occupied by young women and children who are coming out of homelessness. Savings from having solar power are going directly back into supporting our life-changing programs to serve more families in need,” said Laura Tancredi-Baese, Chief Executive Officer of Home Start.

While Los Angeles continues to battle the devastating monstrous fires, San Diego has been battling fossil fueled fires across the county all week as has Riverside County. The “Border 2 Fire” has burned over 6,500 acres, causing unhealthy air quality for much of San Diego and northern Mexico. Some schools have canceled classes, disrupting parents' work schedules and forcing kids indoors. For some families, school is the only place a child gets a warm meal, and that gets taken away during disasters.

Fires in California in January are not typical. This is not the future we want. We must hold our elected officials and corporations accountable to act on climate. We can also take individual actions to help create a more just and livable future.

Groups argue that NEM 3.0 hampers new installations; the California Public Utilities Commission says new guidelines are fair

11/30/2023

The California Public Utilities Commission’s decision to slash the value of electricity produced on the state’s rooftops is having the exact effect the solar industry said it would. Sales are down sharply and the solar industry is losing jobs.

California Solar & Storage Association Lobby Day & Info Fair is one week away on June 6th from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the California State Capitol. We are calling on all activists, solar workers and voters to help defend solar rights. Over the last two years we have been hard at work fighting off aggressive attacks on solar from utilities including blocking the Solar Tax and protecting existing solar users’ investments, but the fight is not over. Lawmakers need to hear from you about why they need to keep growing. Come join our community and celebrate all of our accomplishments and milestones as we continue to advocate for solar equity!

If you are interested in attending but need assistance, we still have sponsorship funds for flights that are available on a first come first serve basis for activists and students thanks to CED Greentech San Diego. If you are interested in a sponsorship flight to attend, please email [email protected].
