How do you build a massive deck on a steep La Jolla hillside? It all starts with a rock-solid foundation. 🌊

Here’s a look at the crucial first step for an incredible ocean-view deck project: building the retaining walls. On a slope like this, you can't just start framing. First, you have to tame the terrain. These engineered concrete walls are designed to hold back tons of earth, creating the stable, level tiers that the new deck will be built upon.
This heavy-duty process involves:

Setting up intricate formwork to create the precise shape of the walls.
Installing a steel cage of rebar for maximum structural strength.
Using a concrete pump to precisely pour the walls, ensuring a solid, seamless structure.

It all starts from the ground up. 🏗️ Before the walls are framed, the most critical work happens right here. This is the beginning of the foundation phase.

What you're seeing in these photos is the meticulous process of preparing for the concrete slab pour. After clearing and grading the site, our team has:

Excavated and formed the footings, which are the deep trenches that will provide a stable base for the structure's load-bearing walls.

Installed the underground plumbing for future drains and utilities.

Laid a grid of rebar (steel reinforcement bars) that gives the concrete foundation immense tensile strength and durability.

Precision and attention to detail at this stage are non-negotiable. A perfectly executed foundation ensures the strength and longevity of the entire home we build on top of it.
