The fight against artificial colorants has been going on for a long time. In 1990, some dyes, including Red N°3, were shown to be carcinogenic in animals, raising questions about their safety in humans.

🚫Then, in 2008, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) asked the FDA to ban all artificial dyes. Despite several studies that showed these dyes were dangerous, no bans were implemented. However, the FDA asked for further research to be done.

So, in 2017, CSPI sponsored a bill👨‍⚖️ in California to study how dyes affect children. In 2021, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment published a research review, concluding that artificial dyes may cause or worsen neurobehavioral problems in some children🧠. This led to more calls for bans, which finally resulted in 2023 with a ban on Red 3 in California.

In 2024, California introduced a bill prohibiting synthetic dyes in school meals. CSPI testified to support the bill and is working to secure its passage into law💼.
