Letâs talk about endometriosisđЏ
It affects 1 in 10 people with periods, but most people have never heard of it. Endometriosis happens when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or even other organs. This causes intense pain, heavy periods, fatigue, and can lead to infertility.
The wild part? It takes an average of 7-10 YEARS to get diagnosed because symptoms are often dismissed as âbad periods.â Many people are told the pain is normal or all in their head. But itâs NOT normal to be in debilitating pain.
Treatment options include hormonal therapy (birth control, progestin, GnRH agonists), pain management, excision surgery to remove lesions, and emerging therapies like pelvic floor physical therapy and dietary modifications.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for endometriosis, but symptoms can be managed!
Furthermore, scientists are actively focusing on developing targeted drugs, understanding the diseaseâs causes, and finding less invasive treatments. Current treatments mainly manage symptoms and are not curative, which is why many researchers are working on new approaches to address the root cause of the disease.Â
