To kick off Women’s History Month, we want to shine a spotlight on our founder, Judy Staley. REC Solar was created out of her passion for the environment and cofounder Fred Sisson’s electrical skills. From 1997 through 2012, Judy Staley served REC Solar in various capacities: as President and CEO (1997-2006), Director of Internal Operations (2006-2007), Director of Legal and Legislative Relations (2007-2010), and Director of Industry Relations (2010-2012). We reached out to Judy for her thoughts about how the solar industry has changed in the last 30 years.
“The solar industry has made great strides from back in 1997 and 1998 when I was often the only woman in the room for solar meetings and was also one of the youngest company CEOs. During those early days, it was hard to get my voice heard and to be taken seriously. At the 2023 RE+ conference, there were so many more women involved in the industry both presenting in conference sessions and in positions of leadership. I was very heartened to see how much more inclusive the industry has become for women over time.”
In 2024, women account for 25% of workers in the overall energy sector and 32% of the renewable energy workforce. Women have the highest representation in the solar energy sector, with estimates between 30-40% of the workforce. We see this reflected in REC Solar currently, with women making up a third of our company, and it’s been about one-third for the last decade. There's room for improvement in the industry, but the change we've seen so far is encouraging.
