Why are they writing on the steel?

It’s all about traceability.

Every billet is identified so it can be traced back to the exact heat, strand, and cut it came from. While each billet already has a permanent metal tag, the hot writing serves as a backup identifier to help ensure traceability throughout the production process. That traceability connects the material to detailed production and quality records.

This simple but important step helps reduce confusion, maintain accurate records, and ensure the right product gets to the right customer.

Great steel starts with great people.

For 90 years, one thing has remained constant at Charter: our investment in our people.
We believe we are one family and one team, and that belief shapes how we work, lead, and support one another every day.

Our culture is the foundation for sustained profitable growth in a safe and ethical work environment. By cultivating that culture, we’re able to reinvest in what matters most, our people and our organization.

Because when our people thrive, Charter thrives.

When evaluating steel composition and investigating potential issues, the answer isn't always visible to the naked eye.

At Charter Steel, our Technical Service Lab uses advanced technologies such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) to identify steel inclusions, residues, types of coating, corrosions and failure modes.

Our investment in the Technical Service Lab enables us to provide deeper insights into steel performance and product design, helping our customers make more informed decisions.

Better research leads to better steel.

Consistency matters long before steel becomes a finished part.

When chemistry, dimensional control and mechanical properties remain consistent from shipment to shipment, manufacturing becomes more predictable. Operators spend less time making adjustments, quality teams have greater confidence in the process, and production keeps moving.

That's why consistency is one of the most important things we build into every coil and bar that leaves Charter Steel.

Because when your steel performs predictably, your manufacturing process can too.

Last month, employees across Charter came together at Charter Steel – Saukville to experience FM's Risk Prevention Truck during its cross-country tour.

Through interactive demonstrations and real-world scenarios, participants explored strategies for identifying hazards, preventing loss, and strengthening the resilience of our people and operations. The experience reinforced Charter's commitment to proactive risk prevention and the shared responsibility we all have in creating a safer workplace.

Thank you to everyone who participated and to our partners at FM for providing this unique learning opportunity.

Last Thursday, we hosted our annual Intern Summer Showcase in Mequon, Wisconsin.

Our interns came together to present the key projects they worked on during their time at Charter this summer. Leaders from across the company attended the event to learn more about their accomplishments and celebrate the impact they made throughout the internship program.

Congratulations to our summer intern class on another fantastic summer. Charter is proud of all the hard work you've accomplished, and we look forward to seeing all that you'll achieve in the future.

Charter Steel is committed to helping our employees learn, grow, and build their futures—because investing in our people helps us better serve our customers.

One way we support that commitment is through our Continuous Improvement (CI) training programs. These courses are designed to strengthen problem-solving, analytical thinking, and continuous improvement skills.

Our Orange Belt program introduces employees to foundational Lean principles and tools, including Quick Change Charter (QCC), the 7 Basic Quality Tools, Process Mapping, Root Cause Analysis, 5S, the 8 Wastes of Lean, and Kanban.

Building on that foundation, our Green Belt program provides more advanced training in Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, team leadership, statistics, Minitab, data analysis, presentation skills, and hands-on project work through the completion of a Green Belt improvement project.

We also offer Teams at Charter, a training program that helps employees strengthen their communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills. For those looking to build on these foundations, Leading & Facilitating Teams at Charter provides opportunities to further develop leadership, facilitation, and organizational skills.

Our success is driven by our people, which is why we're dedicated to fostering a culture of continuous learning and continuous improvement. By equipping our teams with these skills, we're continually improving the way we work—helping us deliver the quality, consistency, and service our customers expect.

At Charter Steel, sustainability starts with a commitment to the circular economy.

More than 90% of our steel products are made from recycled scrap metal, demonstrating our long-standing dedication to responsible manufacturing and resource conservation. This commitment has made Charter Steel one of Wisconsin's largest recyclers.

The recycled materials used in our process come from a variety of sources, including unused metal from automotive stamping operations and shredded steel recovered from end-of-life vehicles. By giving these materials a second life, we help reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and keep valuable steel in circulation.

Through efficient resource management and continuous material reuse, Charter Steel is helping build a more sustainable future while delivering the high-quality steel our customers depend on.
