In this demonstration, we take a close look at a fiberglass step ladder with a crack on the rear rail near the lower bracing — one of the most overlooked areas during routine visual checks. Because it’s on the back side and lower to the ground, it’s easy to miss when doing a quick pre-use inspection before starting a task.

This type of damage often starts as a small fracture around the bracing and rivets, spreading slowly with each use until the rail fibers start to the delaminate. What looks like a minor cosmetic issue can quickly lead to complete structural failure under load.

Our goal with the Smart Ascend Series is to help safety professionals recognize the subtle signs of ladder fatigue and stress before they become incidents. A few extra seconds spent on inspection can prevent an unexpected fall.

Ladder Guardians is proud to launch our new Ascend Smart Series — quick, practical safety tips and videos designed to keep crews climbing smarter and safer.

🎥 In this week’s episode “Tip of the Week,” we take a close look at spreader brackets on fiberglass step ladders and how worn rivets can hollow out the fiberglass, leading to potential ladder collapse.

Even a small defect can turn into a serious hazard. That’s why OSHA requires pre-use ladder inspections (29 CFR 1910.23(b)(9) and 1926.1053(b)(15)) — to catch damage before it causes injury.

🛡️ Partnering with Ladder Guardians helps your team stay compliant, extend ladder life, and prevent accidents before they happen.

We often get asked; “Does OSHA Require Ladder Inspections?”

Yes, OSHA requires ladder inspections to ensure they are safe for use and free of hazards. According to 29 CFR 1910.23(b)(9), ladders must be inspected regularly, with inspections conducted by a competent person to identify visible defects, such as broken or missing rungs, loose components, or structural defects. Inspections must occur:

Before Each Use: Workers are expected to visually inspect ladders to ensure they are in good condition and suitable for the task.

Periodic Inspections: Employers must implement scheduled inspections to assess wear and tear, environmental damage (e.g., corrosion or warping), and proper functionality.

This process applies to all types of ladders, and this is where Ladder Guardians comes in. When you have an outside professional that it’s focus is only on ladders, you can rest assured we’re going to perform a thorough Inspection of each ladders condition/functionality and determine if it’s safe to return to field, or if the ladder needs to be removed from service and replaced. Any and all repairs that may be required will be done to OSHA, ANSI, and Manufacturer guidelines.

If you any have questions about ladders, need on-site inspections scheduled, or need some great Toolbox Talk materials, please feel free to reach out!

Metal Rolling Ladders and Fixed Ladders are essential in industries such as manufacturing, food processing, research, mining, aerospace, and warehousing are just a few. They provide access to various heights for equipment, machinery, supplies, and roof or tank access.

Regular inspections and maintenance of these ladders are crucial due to their frequent use. Neglecting or rushing this task can pose safety risks and we understand the burden this can have of your safety team to get inspections done regularly.

Ensuring the safety and compliance of your ladders through monthly, quarterly, and annual inspections is paramount. Our services can help ease this responsibility from your safety team, ensuring the safety of your ladders.

When was the last time a professional ladder inspection and repair company evaluated your facility's ladders for safety and compliance? If it has been a while, we are here to assist.

Ladders are a leading cause of workplace injuries, resulting in significant financial losses for companies annually. Prioritizing inspection, diligence, and training is crucial for ladder safety.
