Straw burning has been a common practice to remove problematic straw and black grass for years. Due to the environmental conditions in Eastern Washington State the lack of moisture means straw does not breakdown well, with year after year of straw building up and making conditions difficult to drill the following years crops into.
We buy the straw from the farmers on long term index linked contracts, providing a stable income, removing the straw and returning the nutrients in the form of liquid digestate.
Each of our 10MW facilities can use up to 100,000 tons of straw per year, that’s 50,000 acres of fields not being burnt.

The positive knock on effect for the climate is the farmer uses less bought in fossil based fertiliser, and less burning which releases pollutants like particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), impacting air quality and potentially human health.
By using vehicles that run on renewables fuels such as renewable diesel and RNG we further reduce emissions and reduce GHG one field at a time.
