What should a roof quote spell out?

Start with the license number. Florida law says a contractor's registration or certification number has to appear on each bid and contract (Fla. Stat. 489.119).

Then the parts. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommends that a steep-slope roof system generally include six components: shingles, underlayment, ice and water barrier, starter strip, hip and ridge shingles, and ventilation for intake and exhaust.

A good quote names what's coming off and what's going on, part by part. Does yours?

Your roof's peak goes on last.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association's roofing manual says to apply all the field shingles first, then the hip shingles up to the ridge, before the ridge cap shingle, and that the ridge capping covers the top courses of shingles on all sides of the ridge. The association also says hip and ridge products add definition and a finished touch while providing added protection to the roof.

Next time you're out front, follow the top line of your roof, end to end. Can you see the cap row running along it?

Nobody looks up and says, "Nice straight rows." They notice when the rows wander.

On this roof we finished in Gainesville, the rows on this slope run straight from the ridge down to the gutter, parallel to the edge the whole way. That doesn't happen by accident.

Getting roof quotes? Ask each roofer how they keep the rows straight.

You've probably never watched where the rain goes.

A 2,000 sq ft Gainesville roof sheds about 60,000 gallons a year, and on a house with gutters most of it runs through a channel only a few inches wide.

Next time it really pours, look out a window. Is the water leaving through the downspouts, or spilling over the front edge? Tell us what you see at your house.

Your shingles are covered in crushed rock.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association says shingle granules are made from durable igneous rock, crushed and screened, then coated with a pigmented clay mixture and fired into a ceramic. Its roofing manual says the granule surfacing shields the asphalt coating against the sun's rays and adds color.

From the yard, a roof can read as one color. Up close, the association says, asphalt shingles get their color from multiple colored granules in combination.

What color blend is on yours?

Where does your attic breathe in? Under the eaves.

Attic ventilation pairs intake vents at the eaves, soffit or lower part of the roof with exhaust vents at the ridge or upper part. Those vents should never be blocked or covered.

Stand under the long side of your roof, not the pointed gable end, and look straight up. See vents in the soffit? That's where your attic pulls air in.

Can you spot yours from the ground?

Roof leaks don't pick random spots.

They tend to start where the roof gets interrupted. See the dark seam where two slopes meet? That's a valley, and it carries water off both of them. Same goes for anywhere a vent or pipe cuts through the shingles.

Those are the spots worth keeping clear and sealed. Which one would you have checked first?

Found it yet? Look just below the skylight.
That darker piece doesn't match the shingles around it, and it crosses the seams instead of lining up with its row. From the driveway, you'd never see it.
Shingles shed water as one overlapping layer, so a piece that's out of place is worth a closer look while it's still a small question.
