A few weeks ago we wrapped up one of our final interior projects before we shift to exterior projects for the summer.

This was a bathroom remodel on the 2nd floor of a farm house. New tub/shower, vinyl plank flooring, vanity, mirrors, light fixtures, etc. We also added new vinyl plank flooring through the hallway and replaced the doors and trim throughout the hallway. Overall it was a nice update to the space and the homeowners are thrilled, which is the most important thing.

A month ago we had the opportunity to help someone make their garage feel more finished. Years ago they had this exterior wall of their garage spray foamed as it was previously not insulated. They had planned on installing drywall but it's hadn't gotten done. They reached out for ideas and I suggested going with this vinyl product that would install quickly, be easy to keep clean, and would be a finished product so it wouldn't require painting, etc. This took us a little over a day to complete the installation. We added PVC extension jambs and casing to the window and door on that wall.

Last month we were able to help update a space in a home that was built 5 years ago. They had some floating shelves that were installed adjacent to a fireplace in the basement, but they didn't quite fill the space as much as the homeowner desired. So we built custom floating shelves to match what they had but made them 18 inches wider than what was previously installed. These were made out of 1x poplar and we color matched the stain to the previous shelves which also matched the doors.

Last week we finished up a built-in cabinet/fireplace/entertainment center. The homeowner sketched up a plan for what they wanted and we made it happen. The unit gave them extra storage, display room, and a really nice update to the living room space.

About a month ago we got called back to a project to build a closet system for a large coat closet by the front door in a new home. They decided they wanted a tower with adjustable shelves in the center with double hanging on the left and a single hanging rod on the right which left room to store a card table and folding chairs on the right. We also made one of the face frames on an upper shelf a full 1x4 so they can add hooks to it for easy access to coat storage when company arrives.

In January we had the pleasure of building some custom built-ins for a new house build. I met with the homeowner and designer to talk through what options they wanted in their mudroom. They didn't necessarily want divided lockers per se, but they wanted to have a place for shoes and boots, coats and backpacks, as well as hats. We landed on building this unit with solid oak shiplap that would allow hooks to be installed anywhere on the back wall. They also wanted some adjustable shelves where they can put some baskets and a drawer for each person to have gloves, scarves, etc.

In the broom closet they wanted adjustable shelving on one side and a long area on the other in order to utilize it for brooms, mops, the vacuum, etc

One of the reasons I like my job is because of the variety. Every day is different. Sometimes it's nice to work in the shop and build something, finish it, and install it. There's a lot of satisfaction that comes from seeing what you can build with your own 2 hands.

This summer, a friend at the lumber yard told me, “Hey, I voted for you,” and I had no idea what he meant. He explained I was a finalist for the 2025 Best of the N’West in Handy Man Services—news that surprised me even more when I later learned I had actually won.

Since then, I’ve thought a lot about how I got here. I taught 7th-grade math for 13 years before leaving education 14 years ago to work with my wife at ATLAS and start the ATLAS Internship, where we trained about 80 college students over 9 years in discipleship, leadership, and service. Because that job was part-time, we talked about how I could spend the rest of my time—and soon people began asking for help with projects. That’s how Hawaiian Handyman began.

Over the past 14+ years, I’ve been blessed to work with 315 homeowners and businesses—mostly right here in Sioux Center—and many of them have trusted me again and again. For someone without formal construction training, that’s incredibly humbling.

I’ve also been fortunate to have great help along the way. We enjoy our work, do our best, have fun doing it, and don’t take ourselves too seriously. There’s real satisfaction in working with your hands and seeing what you’ve accomplished.

To my customers: thank you for trusting me in your homes and for your encouragement. It’s been an honor to bring your ideas to life.

This Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for all the relationships God has blessed me with—customers, contractors, suppliers, coworkers, and family. I couldn’t have done this without your support. Helping people with their projects, big or small, is something I truly value.

I had actually scheduled this post a month ago but for some reason it got lost in cyberspace.

Anyway, this was a fun project we did late summer/early fall. We had been contacted because the homeowners had purchased a hot tub and needed to have a home for it built.

The 16 x 19 slab was poured in mid July and we started framing in the beginning of August. This pergola/shelter/pavilion was framed 14x14 with 8 feet of clearance under the beams and a tray ceiling. The rafters were cut to match the pitch of the roof of the house. We wrapped the posts and beams with LP Smart Trim and installed board and batten siding on the walls, ceiling, and gables.

We also updated the small sunroom that is adjacent by replacing 2 windows with Gerkin picture windows, replacing 1 window with a Gerkin vinyl sliding patio door, and removing an old storm door that never had an actual exterior door on the inside of it with a new Bayer Built full glass exterior door.

This was a really fun project to build for a great family. We've gotten reports of how much they've enjoyed using the hot tub after a long day's work or after a HS football game as the fall nights have gotten cooler. I'm guessing they'll get some use out of it this winter too. It's always a pleasure to get to help people bring their ideas to life.

Earlier this week we completed a quick project renovating a former hog shed that is now being used for storage. We removed the walk in entry door, enlarged the rough opening, and installed an 8 ft wide x 7 ft high overhead door. This will allow the homeowner to store a zero turn mower in the building and when we were planning the project I seem to recall him saying he wouldn't be mad if the new overhead door would allow him to fit a '70 Chevelle in there too. 😉

Earlier this week we wrapped up our 4th and final deck project of the season. The deck we replaced was 25-30 years old and in pretty bad shape and unsafe.

There were some challenges due to the pool fence around the backyard and only a 27 inch wide gate opening so all the material had to be hand carried in and we couldn't use equipment for the new footings. Our solution was to install Diamond Pier footings which eliminated the mess of augering holes and pouring concrete. They also have the added benefit of being able to start building on as soon as they were installed instead of having to wait a day for the concrete to set.

We simplified the design a bit squaring off what were clipped corners and multiple heights on the previous deck to save some of the cost of material and labor.

The deck has 3 sections. The north end is 13 x 10 with 13 feet wide stairs, the center covered section is 12 x 9, and the south section is 24 x 12 making it a total 48 feet wide.

We installed TimberTech composite with aluminum JAM Systems railing. Overall a great update to give the homeowners a lot of flexible options for seating, dining, etc. and to be able to do it safely.
