With another winter storm on the way, more power outages are possible. Here are a few ideas to help you through the storm. DISCLAIMER!!These are suggestions only and you use them at your own risk!!
1). Heat.
Leading up to the Storm turn your thermostat up a few degrees. This will give you a little longer warmth if the power goes out.
2.) Snow.
Snow is an excellent insulator. If you can , bank some snow around your home. Make sure not to cover any vents or intake terminals, gas meters, etc.
3) Water
If you have a bathtub fill it with water. 5 gal pails are good too. Having water to flush toilets is always good.
This is more for people on a private well type system
If you you have empty freezer space fill some empty jugs 3/4 full of water and freeze them. This will help keep the freezer cold. Extra water for drinking. Cooking etc. If you have tank style water heater you have approx 50 gallons of water ( depending on tank size)of water you can use for an emergency. Make sure power and /or gas is shut off to the heater before draining any water out. Hook a hose to the drain valve on the bottom of the heater. Open a hot faucet to let air in to the tank so it will drain. The first water may be pretty dirty looking but fine for flushing toilets. Unfortunately Some drain valves may be plugged from sediment and unusable. Make sure tank is completely refilled before turning power/ gas back on. You want to have water running out of a faucet for a couple minutes before turning back on.
4.) Lights.
Flashlights, candles, etc. Make sure you have plenty of good batteries. Be careful with candles or lanterns. Battery powered lights are best. LED lights last a long time on little power.
5.)Heaters. Gas or oil heaters can be dangerous if not used properly. They all use air for combustion and produce Carbon dioxide, Carbon Monoxide and other fumes. If you are using one. Crack a window open to allow some fresh air in and some of the fumes out . I cannot stress enough the importance of this. People die every winter from Carbon dioxide (Monoxide) poisoning because they sealed themselves in a room with a gas or oil heater. Candles and gas lanterns also come under this heading.they use air and create fumes.Quite a bit less than heaters, but use with caution nonetheless.
6.)Spirits
No not booze!! Keep your spirits up. Play cards, Monopoly whatever. Weather the storm ,as they say. Power Company crews are working as hard and as fast as they can. They are working in the weather we are staying inside from. If you call them,be nice and respectful. The are stressed out enough as it is. Spend some quality time with family/friends/ pets/ and it will give you something to remember.
P.S. if you have booze. Have a drink !! Just do it responsibly!! 😁😁
Hope this is helpful
