Interesting Fact:
The first modern mini-split system was invented in Japan in the 1970s to cool high-rise apartments without bulky ductwork. Making it one of the earliest examples if "ductless" cooling that is now widely popular for energy-efficient, room by room climate control.

Interesting Fact:
In winter, colder and drier air lowers indoor humidity, which can dry out the lining of the nose and throat and weaken the body’s first line of defense against viruses. Dry air also helps some viruses survive and spread more easily, increasing the risk of illness. Adding a whole-home humidifier to an HVAC system can help raise indoor humidity, keeping airways moist and creating a healthier indoor environment during the winter months.

Interesting Fact:
Windchill is the wind stealing your body heat like a pickpocket on caffeine. The thermometer might read 0°F, but once the wind kicks up, it strips heat from your skin so fast your body feels like it’s far colder. That’s why a breezy winter day can freeze exposed skin in minutes instead of half an hour. The wind isn’t actually lowering the temperature, it’s supercharging heat loss. Inanimate objects like your home’s plumbing don’t feel it, but your fingers, ears, and nose definitely do. Bottom line: cold is bad, but cold with attitude is dangerous.

Interesting fact:
Propane and natural gas are actually odorless. The familiar “gas smell” isn’t natural. It’s intentionally added for safety. Gas companies inject a chemical called ethyl mercaptan, which gives the gas its strong odor and helps people detect leaks quickly.

Interesting Fact:
Heat pumps are essentially air conditioners that can run in reverse.
In simple terms, an air conditioner works by moving refrigerant through an evaporator coil inside the home. As indoor air passes over the coil, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air. That heat is then carried outside to the condenser, where it’s released.
A heat pump does the same process—but in the opposite direction. Instead of removing heat from the house, it pulls heat from the outdoor air and transfers it indoors, releasing that heat into the living space. This is why heat pumps become less effective as outdoor temperatures drop: there’s less heat energy available in colder air to extract.
Even so, modern heat pumps can still perform very well in colder climates like New England, especially when paired with a backup heat source.

This is a simplified explanation of how the system works, but it captures the basic idea.

It's not cold out.
Scientifically, "cold" doesn't exist; the word refers to an absence of heat or energy.
Temperature is what we use to measure the energy contained within the particles of a certain object. An object with more energy will have a higher temperature, and an object with less energy will have a lower temperature.

Interesting fact:
Snow is actually a natural insulator. When the air outside is colder than the snow, less heat escapes into the colder air. Plus, snow is full of tiny air pockets that create an effective barrier, further reducing heat loss.

Interesting fact:

Underfloor heating began with the Romans’ hypocaust system, an innovative but inefficient and dangerous method that used wood-fired flues beneath floors. Over time, technological advances led to safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly systems that distribute heat evenly and reduce energy waste. Modern underfloor heating now uses hot-water piping or electric heating mats along with precise controls and durable materials to provide long-lasting, hygienic, and cost-effective comfort in homes and buildings.
