Get Your Home ready for Colder Weather

As cooler weather approaches, it’s a good time to make sure your home is ready for the heating season.

· Test your carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if needed

· Consider installing a natural gas detector for an added layer of protection

· Schedule an annual inspection of gas appliances to help ensure they are operating safely and efficiently

Before starting any project that involves digging, make your first call to 811.
Whether you're planting a tree, installing a fence, or building a deck, contacting 811 helps protect underground utilities, prevent service disruptions, and keep everyone safe. It's also the law.

🌱 Lawn Care Safety Reminder

As you mow, trim, and maintain your yard this summer, keep an eye out for your natural gas meter and other above-ground gas equipment.

• Give meters plenty of space when mowing or using string trimmers.
• Keep grass and shrubs trimmed so meters remain visible and accessible.
• When working close to a meter, use hand tools instead of power equipment to help avoid accidental damage.
• Always contact 811 before digging or starting landscaping projects.

If you accidentally damage a natural gas meter or pipeline, leave the area immediately. Once you are a safe distance, call 911 and VGS.

A little awareness while working in your yard can help keep your family, neighbors, and community safe.

Our natural gas crews and contractors are out every day maintaining critical infrastructure that our communities rely on.

If you encounter utility work zones, please:
• Slow down
• Avoid distractions
• Follow directions from traffic controllers
• Use extra caution around crews and equipment

Traffic controllers are there to keep everyone safe — including you. Thank you for doing your part to help protect workers on and around our roads.
