Carburizing is a case hardening process that adds carbon to the surface of low-carbon steel, creating a hard, wear-resistant outer layer while keeping the core tough and ductile. Parts heated in a carbon-rich atmosphere at around 1,700°F gain:

→ a hard, wear-resistant case
→ a tough, ductile core
→ deeper case depths
→ the ability to use lower-cost steels

Because carburizing delivers both surface hardness and core strength, it's ideal for high-load, high-wear components like gears, bearings, shafts, and fasteners.

Most case hardening processes come with a tradeoff: better surface properties, but at the risk of distortion.

Ferritic nitrocarburizing (FNC) mitigates this risk. Its low processing temperatures, between 950°F and 1,100°F, deliver a hard, wear-resistant surface with very minimal dimensional change compared to other processes. That makes it the go-to choice for finished machined components where tight tolerances can't be compromised.

Additive manufacturing opens the door to complex, high-performance parts. But the process can leave behind internal voids that compromise strength, fatigue resistance, and reliability.

Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) closes those voids. High heat and pressure work together to bring parts to near-100% theoretical density; making HIP the standard post-process for precision additive manufacturing in aerospace, medical, and defense.
