Sometimes the problem isn't where you can see it... it's where you can't.

A customer called because they were having to empty their emergency drain pan several times a day just to keep the A/C running.

At first glance, nothing obvious stood out. Since most of the evaporator drain pan couldn't be visually inspected, I added food coloring to the condensate water. The red dye you see in the picture revealed exactly what I suspected—a cracked primary drain pan that was allowing water to leak into the emergency drain pan.

This is a great example of why proper diagnostics matter. Clearing a drain line or replacing a float switch may have temporarily addressed the symptom, but it wouldn't have fixed the actual problem.

If your A/C is shutting off because of a float switch, your emergency drain pan is filling with water, or you've noticed water around your indoor unit, don't ignore it. Finding the root cause early can prevent water damage, reduce repair costs, and get your system back to operating the way it should.

Avalanche Heating & Air Conditioning, LLC is proud to serve Statesville, Troutman, Mooresville, Harmony, and the surrounding communities with honest diagnostics and quality HVAC service. We don't believe in guesswork—we believe in finding the real problem and fixing it right the first time.

🐾 A Reminder for Pet Owners in Apartments, Condos, and Townhomes 🐾

We were called out today for an air conditioning issue and found something that many homeowners and tenants don't realize can happen.

This outdoor unit had a refrigerant leak caused by years of dog urine. The acids and salts in pet urine can eat away at copper tubing and aluminum coils, eventually causing corrosion and refrigerant leaks that can be very expensive to repair.

📸 This is a real example of the damage we found today. If you live in a communal property where multiple dogs have access to the area, consider: ✅ Keeping pets away from outdoor HVAC units
✅ Installing a small barrier around the unit (while maintaining proper airflow)
✅ Rinsing the area with water occasionally if pets have been marking near the equipment
✅ Having your system inspected regularly for signs of corrosion

A simple habit can help prevent a repair that could cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Maintenance finally caught up with this 21-year-old air conditioning system today. To keep it running, we replaced:
✅ Outdoor fan motor
✅ Indoor blower motor
✅ Dual capacitor
✅ Compressor contactor
✅ Cleaned and washed the outdoor condenser coil
This is a great example of how proper maintenance and timely repairs can help extend the life of your HVAC equipment. While no system lasts forever, taking care of small issues before they become major failures can add years to the life of your system.
If your air conditioner is making unusual noises, struggling to keep up, or hasn't been serviced in a while, now is the time to have it checked—especially with North Carolina summer heat in full swing.

A dirty air filter doesn’t just affect airflow — it affects system performance, efficiency, and static pressure too.

These pictures show the difference between a one-year-old dirty filter and a brand new filter using a Testo manometer:

🔹 Dirty filter: 0.14 in. w.c.
🔹 New filter: 0.10 in. w.c.

At first glance, that may not seem like a big difference, but the dirty filter caused roughly a 40% increase in filter pressure drop. That extra restriction forces the system to work harder to move the same amount of air.

Another thing many homeowners don’t realize: properly taping filters in place can help reduce air bypass around the edges. When air slips around the filter instead of through it, dust and debris can still end up inside the system and ductwork.
A clean, properly sealed filter helps: ✅ Improve airflow

✅ Reduce dust buildup
✅ Protect the equipment
✅ Improve indoor air quality
✅ Keep the system operating more efficiently

Rainy, mild temperature days can make your home feel sticky and uncomfortable — even when the AC is running. 🌧️🏠

That’s because AC units don’t always run long enough during mild weather to remove excess humidity from the air, especially when oversized.

High indoor humidity can lead to:

- Musty odors
- Condensation on vents/windows
- Poor comfort
- Mold and mildew concerns

At Avalanche Heating and Air Conditioning, we can help improve your indoor comfort with solutions like:

✅ Whole-home dehumidifiers
✅ Electric heat reheat kits for heat pump systems
✅ Load Calculations to ensure that your HVAC system is properly sized

If your house feels damp during rainy weather, give us a call and let’s get your comfort back under control. 💨
