After receiving the devastating news that while the Sauk County Sheriff Department recommended Negligent Homicide, the Sauk Count DA has decided no charges would be filed against the driver that took Zane’s life November 22, 2022 our family has been forced to fight a fight that we should not have to. No loved one should experience such great loss and then continually must fight for accountability and justice. Please know that we have discovered numerous inconsistencies in the case file, including what we can assume is a large amount of missing information or just a sloppy case file, either way it is not ok. There are also contradictions in the DA decision memo.
I am not going to provide all details that this time but I will share a few. First and foremost, all other things aside, the driver admitted knowing that they should pull over and call someone, that they should not continue driving, yet they decided to continue costing Zane his life. All he did wrong that morning was go to work. The jobsite was very well-marked and exceeded OSHA standards. The driver drove past electronic message boards and orange barrels to get to Zane. This cannot go uncharged. Please know that our family does not want this person to go to prison, we do however believe that accountability is necessary, not just for Zane but for anyone that works in the roadway. Our family wanted to advocate for community service, like speaking at high schools or to drivers ed classes to increase awareness.
We have attorneys and investigators as well as a media person. Our family is doing this a great personal expense because the legal system has let all everyone down.
Please consider following this page, we may need letters of support or people to show up for hearings or other such events. We will also be sharing additional information as we work through everything with legal counsel and investigators.
All we can do now is try to save lives going forward, Zane would want that, and he deserves it.
