As mentioned last week, nearly one million people in New York City have disabilities, accounting for approximately 11% of the city's population. Despite this, many NYC renters are unaware of the accommodations and rights they are entitled to, how to request these accommodations, or what to do if they face retaliation.
With that in mind, it’s equally important to address modifications, which differ from accommodations but are just as essential for tenants with disabilities. Modifications involve physical changes to a unit or building, such as installing wheelchair ramps, widening doorways, or lowering countertops, to make housing more accessible.
See below for our Master Doc on NYC Renter Disability Modifications, where we break down everything you need to know, including who pays for modifications and how to request them. As always, if you have any specific questions, feel free to leave a comment, and we’ll get back to you ASAP.
