On early Sunday morning (Aug 30), the successful SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope marked a massive leap forward in our quest to understand dark energy, exoplanets, and astrophysics.🛰️⚛️🔭

Named in honor of Dr. Nancy Grace Roman (NASA’s first chief astronomer also known as the “Mother of Hubble”), this mission carries forward her transformative legacy!

This next-generation observatory features a field of view 100 times larger than Hubble’s while matching its high-resolution clarity and allowing it to survey billions of galaxies in a fraction of the time. Over its mission, Roman will map the invisible forces of dark energy and dark matter, conduct a sweeping census of distant exoplanets, and test advanced coronagraph technology to directly image worlds outside our solar system.

Why is tonight’s moon glowing a deep reddish-orange? 🤔🌕

Tonight marks July’s full moon, or the Buck Moon, named by the Algonquin people to mark the time of year when young male deer grow their new antlers. 🦌

While it looks dramatic, this vivid color isn’t caused by a lunar eclipse but actually a mix of atmospheric physics and wildfire smoke.

As moonlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, it hits tiny air molecules and smoke particles (currently drifted in from Canadian wildfires). This triggers Rayleigh scattering: the same physics behind bright red sunsets. 🌅

Blue light travels in short wavelengths, so it gets scattered in all directions while red/orange light travel in longer wavelengths, allowing them to pass through the haze and reach our eyes!

NASA’s Europa Clipper has officially launched on its journey to Jupiter’s moon Europa, where it will explore the possibility of life in its vast subsurface ocean.🌊 The mission will focus on three key objectives: determining the thickness of Europa’s icy shell and its interactions with the ocean below, studying its composition, and investigating its geology. This marks a new chapter in space exploration, with Europa Clipper set to conduct groundbreaking science in 2030!

Fall is in the air! 🍂 Last night’s supermoon was something magical — September’s Harvest Moon, bigger and brighter than usual, kicked off the season beautifully. 🌕✨ According to NASA, the moon will appear full for three days (Monday evening to Thursday morning), but the real treat is the partial lunar eclipse coming up. On Tuesday, Sept 17, right after the moon peaks at 10:44 PM ET, you’ll catch a glimpse of the top 8% of the moon in full shadow. 🌑 Don’t miss it! 🌙

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the Earth and the sun, temporarily obscuring the sun’s light. This is a special astronomical event because it allows scientists to study the sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona, which is usually hidden by the bright light of the sun’s surface. The path of totality for this eclipse covered a wide area sweeping through Texas all the way to Maine.

This is NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope – the largest, most powerful, and most complex space science telescope ever built. The telescope’s first full-color images and spectroscopic data will be released on July 11 at 5 PM ET! This will be the first step in further helping us unfold the infrared universe.

President Joe Biden will release one of Webb's first images in a preview event at the White House in Washington. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson will provide remarks. A live stream of the event will be available on NASA TV (more details at the link in my bio). The image will be available simultaneously on NASA's website.
