Here are two different heating systems on which customer's wanted a preventive seasonal service completed. Both customers acknowledged that there were no issues and they just wanted their systems checked over for the winter season. Well, in the first two pictures you can see wires in an electric air handler that have burned/melted due to having loose factory connections. This system was installed two years ago by another contractor. Not knocking the other contractor, as this was an issue that was created in the manufacturing facility. In the second two pictures, you can see what is referred to as a heat exchanger. If you look closely, you can see very large/long cracks. This system is a forced air, natural gas furnace that is 25 years old. A cracked heat exchanger can cause carbon monoxide (CO) to enter into the air stream from the blower and then disperse throughout the house. This can be a dangerous situation, and the customer was not aware the furnace even had a problem.
The first unit, the air handler, was repaired and running fine now. The second unit, the furnace, was replaced due to the high cost of repair. While these findings are not typical on a preventative service call, it does and can happen.
With more frigid temperatures appearing again in the near future, I just want to remind everyone that it is never too late in the winter season to get your heating system preventatively serviced.
