A long time customer of mine sent a picture of her heatpump this morning. She was justifiably concerned. This level of frost accumulation is usually a real reason for concern, but this morning held a rare combination of weather that can cause this sort of thing. Her system will be just fine.
Fortunately, she followed my advice from years ago. When her air conditioning unit failed and needed replacement, I recommended a heatpump. We left the gas furnace as her backup heat and set up a 'dual fuel' system. She heats cheap, and when weather precludes a heatpump from keeping the house warm, it switches off to gas heat. Inexpensive heat no matter the conditions.
This heatpump will be just fine once the system switches away from the gas heat and back to heatpump operation.
