September is the unofficial transition from summer to fall, which means it’s the perfect time to get your home and yard ready for the cooler months ahead.
According to Bob Vila, here are 10 projects worth adding to your September checklist:
🍂 1. Shop for appliance deals
September can be a great month to replace an aging appliance as manufacturers begin releasing newer models and discounting previous ones.
🌷 2. Plant spring bulbs
Depending on your growing zone, September may be the time to plant tulips, daffodils, and other spring-blooming bulbs so they can establish roots before winter.
🏊 3. Close the pool
For homeowners in cooler climates, start preparing the pool for winter by cleaning it, adjusting the water, and properly covering it.
🍁 4. Mulch your leaves
Instead of bagging every fallen leaf, mulch them with your mower. The smaller pieces can return nutrients to your lawn.
🔥 5. Service your furnace
Don’t wait for the first cold day to discover a problem. Check your furnace, clean away dust, and replace the filter now.
🛠️ 6. Clean your outdoor tools
Remove grass clippings and debris from mowers and trimmers before storing them for the season, and properly prepare gas-powered equipment for storage.
🌱 7. Save your seeds
Harvest and dry seeds from this year’s flowers, fruits, and vegetables to give yourself a head start on next spring's garden.
📦 8. Have a yard sale
Use the end of summer as an excuse to clear out the garage, closets, or storage areas and make a little extra cash in the process.
🌿 9. Seed or sod the lawn
For cool-season grasses, early September's combination of cooler temperatures and sunshine can create ideal growing conditions.
🏠 10. Check the roof
Look for loose shingles, leaks, and other potential problems before winter weather arrives, and don't forget to clear leaves and debris from the gutters.
A little preventative home maintenance now can save you a much bigger headache later. Save this checklist and start checking off those September projects! ✔️
