🚀 Big News from the CSO International Community! 🌍🎤

Earlier this month, two incredible Chief Science Officers alumni — Ashley Hoffman and Ty Jarvis — took the stage at the 2025 CrossRoads Conference in Indianapolis, hosted by Infosys Foundation USA!

In a powerful Spark Talk titled “From Student to STEM Leader: Our CSO Journey,” Ashley and Ty shared how the CSO program helped them find their voices, pursue their passions in STEM, and become confident, capable leaders. 💡✨
Their words inspired educators, policymakers, and changemakers from across the country — showing the real impact of elevating student voice in STEM.

STEM@SVSU is Leading the Charge for STEM Leadership Across Michigan! 🚀

This year, our STEM@SVSU team has worked tirelessly to train over 210 students as Chief Science Officers (CSOs) — student leaders who are amplifying the voice of youth in STEM education. Thanks to their hard work and passion, the program has successfully expanded to 4 new MiSTEM regions this year, reaching students from Wayne County to Washtenaw County and all the way to the Western Upper Peninsula. And we’re not slowing down! Next year, we’re set to expand into 6 more MiSTEM regions, further growing the reach of student STEM leadership across the state.

But what is a Chief Science Officer? 🤔
CSOs are student leaders who advocate for STEM education in their schools and communities. They launch school-wide STEM initiatives, partner with industry leaders, and ensure student voices are part of the conversation shaping the future of STEM education.

None of this would be possible without the heart, passion, and dedication of our incredible STEM@SVSU team. Every member of the team has played a vital role in supporting these students, growing the CSO network, and helping Michigan’s future STEM leaders thrive. Thank you for everything you do — your work is truly making an impact!

Our last and final LC Alumni Spotlight is CSO Alum Emily. Emily was a CSO during the first year of the program here in the GLBR and has continued to support it ever since. Emily recently graduated from SVSU with a degree in Biochemistry and is now attending Vanderbilt University to pursue her doctorate. Emily was a CSO for 2 years at Carrollton High School where she helped put together STEM Assemblies and held a Teen Science Café with over 50 students. During her time as a CSO Emily’s favorite part was “to meet so many people throughout our region as well as internationally, which broadened my perspective of the impact that STEM can have and will have in the future.” Emily plans to further her education to obtain a Ph.D. in chemistry/biochemistry and eventually work in a research and development industry.

Thank you, Emily, for all of your support over the last 5 years!
