One of the most important reasons we have E-Week is to empower the next generation of innovators, world-changers, and problem solvers to boldly face challenges of the future. Today, over 200 middle school and high school students from around NE Mississippi proudly presented their science & engineering projects in categories ranging from medicine and health to physics and biochemistry. What an honor it was to help with this great event!

E-Week Day 4:

Bowling Night is tonight from 6-9 @ Premier Lanes! We have the whole VIP room rented out, so everyone should get a chance to bowl.

We're looking forward to a beautiful day tomorrow for the cookout from 11-1 pm. Stop by Carrier to pick up a hamburger on your way to class or stay and chat for a while! BorgWarner representatives will be there to talk about incredible internship opportunities and the exciting world of automotive engineering.

Thanks for making this a great E-week so far!

The beauty of slow-mo.
We had a great turnout for yesterday's Pie-a-President! The proceeds collected will go to the Engineering School Formal budget.
Speaking of formal....we've got some exciting news and can't wait to share it with everyone. Stay tuned!

Did you know:

The word engineer comes from a Latin word meaning ‘cleverness’.

The largest wind turbine in the world is in Denmark. It is 720 feet tall, has 260-foot blades, and can generate 8 megawatts of power (enough to supply electricity for 3,000 American homes).

Today in Engineering history:

In 1949 – A modified German V-2 ballistic missile launched from White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, reaching an altitude of 244 miles, and putting it well above the Kármán line. It was the first US rocket to reach “outer space.”

In 1955 – A boy was born to University of Wisconsin graduate students Joanne Simpson and Abdulfattah Jandali. He was given up for adoption and taken in by a machinist and his wife in Mountain View, California. They named him Steve Jobs.

Have a great day everyone!

Welcome to Day 3 of National Engineer's Week! If you haven't been able to participate in any of the events, fret not. There are still plenty of activities going on, including ultimate frisbee this afternoon @ the intramural fields (weather permitting) from 2-5, Bowling Night tomorrow night from 6-9, and our cookout on Friday. We hope to see you at all of these!

This is Bill.
Bill is wearing a $3,000 suit.
Bill had no idea that a person was about to pie him in the face.
Be like the person who pied Bill in the face and stop by
PIE-A-PRESIDENT from 11-1 in front of Carrier.

Demba Bakary Komma Jr. and Hugh Anslum Warren V will be the recipients of your "gracious" tosses.

It's day 2 of E-Week and we're in full swing!

Today in Engineering history:

In 1893 – Germany’s Imperial Patent Office granted Rudolph Diesel Patent No. 67207 for “a new efficient thermal engine”. Today we call it the Diesel engine.

In 1927 – German physicist Werner Heisenberg wrote a letter to Wolfgang Pauli, describing the uncertainty principle for the first time. He submitted a paper on the principle for publication the following March.

Today in Engineering history:

In 1857 – Heinrich Rudolf Hertz was born in Hamburg, Germany. Hertz made key discoveries in optics but also transmitted and received electromagnetic waves and gave his name to the common unit of frequency, Hz.

Thomas Edison receives three US patents on this day, two of which are in essence the first light switches: “Cut Out for Incandescent Electric Lamps” (US Patent 491,992) and “Stop Device.” (US Patent 491,993).

Have a great day!
